Pioneer Boats

Back in 2018 I provided the graphics for an online boat configurator.

The configurator uses pre-rendered files for the different options which are then combined live to produce the final image. My job was to produce the product images in a way so that they could be combined easily and without producing visual artifacts. There were more gotchas than you think, lighting and materials had to be chosen strategically, sharp shadows and reflections of the brightly colored hull needed to be managed. Producing the files for the different options was managed quite elegantly by my Render Management tool Reindeer(using selector nodes). At any moment at the push of a button I could start generation of all the different renderings(100's of separate renders).

The configurator is pretty cool, the biggest boat (if you can choose between everything) has something like 300 Million combinations! Combinatorics blows my mind.

A large portion of my work consisted of importing the CAD models and minimize/fix mesh errors. I find it odd the export/import between CAD software and 3dsMax(and others) is so problematic. The model displays fine in the CAD software and you just know between it and your eyes there's a perfectly fine mesh being generated and fed to the graphics card but the exporters produce a .1% tangled mess :).

I was hired by but it was ultimately for . I wasn't responsible for the configurator and it has quite a few bugs. Salient Partner also tried to avoid paying me so maybe that's why it's buggy. I feel bad for Pioner Boats, I like to deliver high quality to my clients. But this one was out of my hands unfortunately.
